Russia Under Attack (Not Fake News)
Russia is under attack. No one in the West seems to notice or care. Discuss.
In a move that reportedly surprised "even American officials" (doubtful), Ukraine is now on the offensive and grabbing large swathes of land in Russia proper. You know; as opposed to the parts Moscow is trying to steal from Kiev. We are talking about the displacement of actual physical territory from the motherland.
My guess is this infuriates to no end President Vladimir Putin. Last time he got angry, he started a war with his neighbor to the southwest. Now that he's being counterattacked and his citizens are said to be on the run requesting urgent help, the next most obvious question is: what will he do next and how reckless will this man without a conscience become.
The Russian military says NATO submarines are to blame. There are reputed photos of Ukrainian troops crossing the border into Russia. In a world of propaganda and fake news, you do need to be mindful of what you read and who you believe.
The Weimar Republic under Adolf Hitler was infamous for enticing Austrian or Czech soldiers to engage in a minor skirmish, forcing them to run into Germany - and then sending back two battalions to even the score. (Editor's note:: Best book I ever read: "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich".)
Seeing as this battle is already well under way and the casualties on both sides are well into the hundreds of thousands, there is no reason to believe this is a fire drill or head fake.
Here at home we debate debates and hygiene products. And really important stuff like whether Mountain Dew has magical elixir powers.
I dare suggest that as a nation not only should we start discussing what we're going to do when Mr. Putin decides what he's going to do. (Imagine for a moment if armed, foreign hostile troops began trickling into Montana from Canada; or via Mexico en route to New Mexico. Might wake some people up here at home.) But also what our plan is to defuse tensions in Europe and the Middle East and find a way for our allies and adversaries to back off from the ledge.
Because regardless if anyone is paying attention or not, things are about as dicey on a global scale as they've been in 75 years and even though this may not be making big headlines here; it's over 'there' that we should pay heed to and maybe begin to be worried about. Or recognize a simmering, looming problem.
All things considered.
