Steph Curry: Forgive Me, For I Have Sinned; You're Great
I take back everything I said about Steph and our guard play. In one of the most thrilling international men's basketball games in modern history, the USA rallied from down 17 to defeat a phenomenal Serbian team and now advances to the Gold-Medal round against host nation, France. Steph Curry led all scorers with 36 points.
It was a maximum team effort down the stretch. The turning point was a killer three by Kevin Durant; on a screen amid the shot, the superstar center Nikola Jokic ran over Joel Embiid creating an off-the ball foul. USA got the bucket and the ball and on a crafty inbound pass Devon Booker knocked down another, open three and the Americans never looked back. LeBron James added a sensational layup down the stretch - truly one of the most crucial and impressive buckets of his entire storied career to help seal the win.
It's a monumental win for Team USA against a Serbian squad that played brilliantly, knocked down tough shots like it were Villanova versus Georgetown; and played spirited, relentless team defense. Bogdan Bogdanovic, who plays professionally for the Atlanta Hawks, had the game of his career and was in tears yet stoic as players shook hands after the clock expired.
Steve Kerr didn't play Jayson Tatum, again, and at the conclusion of the contest no one - including the Boston Celtics star Mr. Tatum himself - much seemed to care. A win is a win. And you won't see too many games as exciting or riveting as this one.
Next up: France. And Wemby. For all the marbles. And the Gold. There is no crying in basketball. Well; maybe just a little every now and then. Like today. USA! USA!!
